American student Amanda Knox was a naive young woman publicly “crucified” and “impaled” to justify wrongly imprisoning her for murder, her lawyer told an Italian court on Thursday.

Knox is appealing a 2009 verdict that found her guilty of murdering her British roommate Meredith Kercher during a drug-fuelled sex game that went wrong. Kercher’s half-naked body was found in 2007 in a bloody pool in the apartment the two shared.

Knox was arrested on Nov. 6, 2007 — four days after Kercher’s body was found in their apartment in Perugia. Knox was sentenced to 26 years behind bars, and prosecutors want the term increased to life.

Her Italian boyfriend at the time, Raffaele Sollecito, and an Ivorian drifter were also jailed over the murder. But much of the focus in the case has been on Knox, who prosecutors allege led the sexual assault and held the knife that slit Kercher’s throat.

Wrapping up the defense case, Knox’s lawyer Carlo Dalla Vedova pointed to errors in the police investigation and urged a panel of lay and professional judges to look beyond the image of a sex-crazed wild girl created by the media and prosecutors.

Polly thinks she was a girl who was quite different from how she has been depicted and she should be freed! If they don’t free her I will personally start a boycott Italy PR campaign. Please tell me your thoughts on the trial?

Obama goes to Hollywood

Appearing at the Fig and Olive restaurant in West Hollywood, Obama spoke to a group of Hollywood and music industry big wigs who had paid $17,900 apiece to get in. The group included DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenburg, who introduced the president, along with actor Jack Black, actor Danny DeVito, actress Rhea Perlman, producer Jon Landau, director Judd Apatow, music producer Quincy Jones, and Calif. Gov. Jerry Brown, among others.

The celebs were seated at round tables with white table linens in the hip, modern, sleek restaurant, with high ceilings and a wall of wines in front of which Obama spoke. David Plouffe and Jay Carney were among those working the crowd before the remarks began.

In his introduction, Katzenberg said: “I have a dependency on President Obama. He inherited a crashing economy and two wars and opponets who questioned if he was even board. Yet he kept us moving fowrad. … He was dealt adversity on all fronts, but he maintained his stature. … We must keep fighting for him so he can keep fighting for us.”

Obama got a standing ovation.

Health insurance cost on the up and up

Employers’ spending on health coverage for workers spiked abruptly this year, with the average cost of a family plan rising by 9 percent, triple the growth seen in 2010.

Family plan premiums hit $15,073 on average, while coverage for single employees grew 8 percent to $5,429, according to a survey released Tuesday by the Kaiser Family Foundation and the Health Research & Educational Trust. (KHN is an editorially-independent program of the foundation.)

Workers paid an average of $921 toward the premium of single coverage and $4,129 for family plans.

The results mark a sharp departure from 2010, when the same survey found average family premiums up only 3 percent.

Although many benefit analysts say the federal health law’s requirements played only a small part in the rise, the results could provide political fodder for both supporters and opponents of the law.

Saudi Women Can Vote!

There is good and bad news this week from the publicity-shy Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The good news is that thanks to King AbdullahBin Abdul Aziz’s announcement on Sunday, Saudi women will be able to vote in municipal elections four years from now and even become full, voting members of the “Shura” Council that advises the king. The bad news is that unless women are given the right to drive, they will have to ask their fathers, husbands, brothers, or sons to take them to the polls.

Polly thinks this is great news for the women of Saudi Arabia! Hopefully, they will get their driver licenses so they can drive themselves to the polls.

The President and First Lady attended the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Annual Phoenix Awards dinner in Washington, D.C. this evening. On the fashion front, Mrs. O wore a floor-length sequin skirt, paired with a black top and Peter Soronen corset belt. A stack of bracelets and jeweled necklace completed the look.

Update: The First Lady wears a black double face paillette fishtail skirt from the Michael Kors Fall 2010 collection.

Bachmann: Don’t ‘settle’ for a moderate

Taking a swipe at her rivals for the GOP presidential nomination, Mrs. Bachmann said Monday that Republicans will take the White House in 2012, so the party should not “settle” and nominate a moderate candidate on the belief that one is more electable than a true conservative.

“Every four years, conservatives are told we have to just stand next to the wall, sit in the back of room and we have to get around a candidate that we’re told is electable,” Bachmann told about 40 people who came to a rally in a hotel ballroom. “We’re told the conservative is the candidate who is not electable. We’re told only the moderate candidate in the race is the one that’s electable, but that isn’t true, because we know the American people are looking for their champion. They’re looking for a fighter. They want someone who’s actually had that experience, someone who’s actually stood up for them, someone who’s been fighting these fights.
